Good, Fast, Cheap Smooth

You might have heard the famous saying, "Good, Cheap, or Fast, you can only pick two."

But is that true? Not in the IT Industry.  In technology there is either "Smooth" or "Bumpy"

Let's talk about that.

1. Let's Talk Cheap
We start with "Cheap".

At first glance, the allure of "cheap" solutions can be tempting. However, in the world of technology, true cheapness is a mirage. Cheap today becomes, "Security nightmare, money pit, and barely ever works" tomorrow.

Much like your neighbors yard, fixating solely on the color green covers up the septic volcano bubbling under the surface.

Nobody wants to save money today so they can swim in shit tomorrow.

2. What about Fast?

Let's do a thought experiment!  Do you believe that first time drivers should immediately get to keys a brand new super car?

Probably not.

This applies even more so to technical projects.

Let's look at the rushed ObamaCare website as an example. Initially, the project was forecasted to cost a mere $500 million. A rushed deployment and subsequent repairs rocketed the total well past $2 Billion dollars.

Ok, we know the government is infamous for laundering money through contractors, so let's choose a less grafty example for the common business.

According to Oxford University, the average large IT project is 45% over budget, and deliver 56% less value than predicted.

In fact, almost 1 in 5 projects go off the rails so hard it threatens the business, what we call a "black swan" event.

I'm gonna repeat myself.

1 in 5 large IT projects go so badly it can shutdown their business.

Yikes.

It's easy to rush to the scene of the accident. A professional driver slows down, considers carefully the obstacles, twists, and signs along the road, and aims to arrive at the goal safely.

Counterintuitively, taking your time from the start and carefully considering your options is faster if you want success.

3.What about Good?
Good isn't always right.

Something can be good, and also be the wrong choice. Not every commuter needs a half ton truck, not every home needs 3 stories, and not every business needs a 6 figure all in one website and document platform.

So we don't aim for good. Good can be too expensive and too complex.

4. Smooth is King
At ByteViking, our goal is never cheap, fast, or good. Our goal is smooth.

As a business owner, you want smooth.

You want the correct tool, that does its intended job well, without headaches, compromises, or cost overruns.

You want a well documented project, clear goals, and met deadlines.

You want well trained support, professional techs on call, and crystal clear usage instructions.

Most of all, you want technology to be a tool that helps your business make money.
